EU promises aid to fire-hit Greece

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso toured fire-damaged southern Greece by helicopter Saturday and promised aid for areas where 64 people died and an estimated 469,000 acres of mostly forest and farmland were destroyed.

Though largely contained, fires forced the evacuation of two villages and the helicopter rescue of firefighters surrounded by flames, according to the Fire Service, which also said high temperatures and strong winds continued to plague its efforts.

Nasdaq Stock Market has given potential bidders for its 31 percent stake in the London Stock Exchange until Friday to express interest in the stake, according to media reports Monday.

Nasdaq has asked for suitors to express interest by the end of the business day Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The deadline isn't firm, the paper said. The stake is worth about $1.71 billion.

The government is focusing its efforts on restoring the devastation caused by the fires in the Peloponnese, while the Fire Brigade is tackling fire rekindling. Meanwhile, a meeting was held under Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis’ chairmanship in Tripolis on Monday on the relief measures for the fire afflicted and the reconstruction of the burnt regions. "The state’s obligation does not stop with the measures we have taken for the relief of our fellow citizens and the fire hit regions. We have a lot to do to heal the wounds caused by the fires and transform the present state to a faster and more efficient," stressed Mr Karamanlis after the meeting.

Karamanlis briefs president Papoulias on toll taken by wildfires

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Monday briefed Greece's president Karolos Papoulias on the heavy toll in lives and damage inflicted up to this time by wildfires that have swathed roughly one-third of the country since late Thursday.

Addressing Papoulias before the cameras, Karamanlis stressed that "we are shocked at this great tragedy. We all feel that we are losing our own people. The battle is still on and the task is difficult."
